Space debris is not a new issue, it has been an ongoing problem in orbit for years. Since the first launch in 1957, defunct human-made objects have been accumulating in space. Whether it’s the debris that was deliberately released from a launch vehicle and spacecraft separating, the fragments generated from unexpected collisions, or simply derelict payload carriers. As of January 1, 2020, the volume of debris in Earth’s orbit putting military satellite operations at risk, exceeded 8,000 tons1.
